KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine claimed Thursday it used sea drones to sink a Russian corvette in the Black Sea as Russian investigators alleged that a Russian military transport plane that crashed last month was brought down by two U.S.-made Patriot missiles fired by Kyiv’s forces. The lake has been more of a bay since 1961, when a channel connecting it to the Black Sea was dug out. The private security firm Ambrey said Ukraine used up to six sea drones, each of which usually carry 300 kilograms (661 pounds) of explosives, in the attack. Ambrey, the security company, noted that any unexploded drones could be a threat for Black Sea shipping. The two missiles were fired by the Ukrainian military from near the village of Lyptsi in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, it said.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine’s intelligence agency took credit for a car bombing Wednesday that killed a member of the Russia-backed authority in the illegally annexed Luhansk region. He had survived a car bombing on Feb. 21, 2022, three days before Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It said that the killing was a warning that “traitors to Ukraine and collaborators with terrorist Russia in temporarily occupied territories … will receive just retribution! Russia-backed insurgents declared a separatist Luhansk People’s Republic in 2014 and fought Ukrainian forces relying on Moscow’s military and political support. The previous government was a staunch supporter of Ukraine, sending it arms worth 671 million euros ($717 million).

She lived through nine months of Russian occupation in Kherson region; her house was searched twice and Russian soldiers roamed the streets rounding up men of fighting age. But the Russian assaults are now more punishing than ever, according to Oleksandr Tolokonnikov, a spokesman for the Kherson Region Military Administration. In mid-October, a Ukrainian cross-river raid managed to temporarily infiltrate occupied villages on the eastern — or left — bank of the river. “It seems that Russians on the left bank are very worried that our brave soldiers will soon cross the river to them and start liberating the left bank. Strikes in a western Ukrainian city blew out windows at a nuclear power plant, once again raising safety concerns. An elderly civilian woman stands with a cat on the balcony of her destroyed house in the Ukrainian city of Avdiivka on Thursday. In the city of Avdiivka, Ukraine claimed it had been successful in repelling assaults and taking out large numbers of Russian soldiers. “It is highly likely that the target for these drones was the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant,” he said. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, close to the front line and occupied by Russian troops since March 2022, has been the main focus of concern.

REUTERS/Alexander Ermochenko/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 22 (Reuters) - Russian forces have foiled several attempts by Ukrainian units to cross the Dnipro River in the southern Kherson region over the past day, Russia's defence ministry said on Sunday. According to the ministry, Ukrainian "sabotage and reconnaissance" teams were stopped while trying to cross the river near the villages of Pridniprovske, Tiahynka and Krynky. On Friday the Institute for the Study of War, a U.S. research group, said Ukrainian forces appeared to have broken through on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River in Kherson. Ukraine recaptured parts of the Kherson region late last year after months of Russian occupation. But Russian forces who left Kherson, the region's biggest city, retreated only as far as the other side of the Dnipro and have continued to shell the city from there.

The village and other parts of the region were seized by Russia early in the war and recaptured by Ukraine in September 2022. The village is only 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Kupiansk, a key focus of the Russian military effort. Ukraine’s air force said that the country’s air defenses intercepted 24 out of 29 Iranian-made drones that Russia launched at the Odesa, Mykolaiv and Kirovohrad regions. Roman Starovoit said that Ukrainian drones attacked infrastructure facilities in several areas, resulting in power cuts. He also said that Ukrainian forces fired artillery at the border town of Rylsk, wounding a resident and damaging several houses.

Russian forces wound up bombing their own occupied territory in Ukraine in a botched attack Friday, Ukrainian officials alleged. The Russians reportedly meant to drop the explosives at the Ukrainian-held right bank of the Dnipro River, a military spokesperson said. Russian state media said 15 people were hurt — and blamed the strike on Ukrainian forces. But Russian state-run news outlet RIA Novosti blamed Ukraine military for the explosion, saying it was Kyiv's forces that struck the residential area in Nova Kakhovka, leaving 15 people injured. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently admitted Kyiv started the counteroffensive too late, giving Moscow ample time to plant countless land mines on Ukrainian soil.

After a relative lull, Russia launched a drone attack early Sunday on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, officials said. All of the Iranian-made Shahed exploding drones were detected and shot down, according to Serhii Popko, the head of the Kyiv city administration. Further south, a 13-year-old boy was wounded in overnight shelling of Ukraine's partially occupied southern Kherson province, said Oleksandr Tolokonnikov, spokesman for the Ukrainian administration of the province. Shelling of the Kherson province continued Sunday morning, wounding four people in the regional capital, also called Kherson. The regional prosecutor's office said that a residential area of the city was targeted by Russian troops operating in the Russia-occupied part of the Kherson province. "

Russia used drones to attack civilians, including children, waiting for aid, Ukraine officials say. The attack reportedly happened in the Kherson region. The incident is the latest reported Russian attack on Ukrainian civilians during the year-long brutal war. According to Ukrinform, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office released a statement accusing Russian drones of attacking a group of civilians who were waiting for help outside a school. Russian officials announced a full retreat from Kherson in November 2022.
"Russia's poorly trained, newly mobilized reservists are very unlikely to stand and resist a Ukrainian counterattack if Ukrainian forces chose to attack them and chase the withdrawing forces," it said. STRINGER/AFP via Getty ImagesKherson, which had a prewar population of 280,000, is the only regional capital to be captured by Russian forces. On Saturday, The UK Ministry of Defense said that Russian forces had built a barge bridge alongside the damaged Antonovskiy bridge in Kherson and forecasted it would become a critical crossing point for retreating Russian forces. The ISW also said that Russian forces are removing patients from the Kakhovka Hospital on the Dnipro's left bank to clear space for anticipated Russian casualties. The reported Russian retreat comes amidst reports of Putin's military faltering in Ukraine, losing momentum, men, and equipment.
Ukrainian soldier Viktor, 35, checks his heavy machine gun at a position along the front line in the Mykolaiv region on October 5, 2022, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Despite being subject to further Russian missile strikes Tuesday, Ukraine's counteroffensive in the south continues, with its forces are consolidating gains and holding firm against Russian counterattacks, the army reported. Southern command said Ukraine's forces were "destroying the enemy's reserves, disrupting the control and logistical support systems of the Russian occupiers" there, as well as gaining a foothold in five liberated settlements. It added that Russian forces had tried to counterattack Ukrainian positions in the Ishchenka area to the east of Mykolaiv "under cover of a massive missile attack across Ukraine" but that "the Russian invaders suffered losses and had to retreat." It added that "the enemy conducts intensive aerial reconnaissance around 17 settlements along the front line and in the newly liberated territories and continues shelling the positions" of Ukraine's armed forces.
As Russia prepares to annex a swathe of Ukrainian territory the size of Portugal after staging what it calls referendums in four provinces, hundreds of Ukrainians escaped through the last Russian checkpoint. For now, Russian forces have been letting some people out of occupied parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia provinces through the one checkpoint. The biggest fear is that fighting-aged men will be press-ganged into Russian forces once Moscow declares the territory to be Russia. With public schools ordered to switch to the Russian curriculum and classes in Russian next month, she did not want her 13-year-old son Bogdan returning to the local school. Kyiv and Western countries call the exercise a complete sham, aimed at justifying the annexation of territory seized by force.
Russian-backed authorities claim to have carried out the referendums over five days on territory that makes up around 15% of Ukraine. "This farce in the occupied territories cannot even be called an imitation of a referendum," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in video address overnight. Russian officials have said any attack on annexed territory would be an attack on Russia itself. Russia's planned annexation of Ukrainian territory has been rejected globally, with even traditional allies of Moscow such as Serbia and Kazakhstan saying they will not recognise it. For now, Russian officials at the checkpoint were letting some people leave.
